The Shawnigan Basin Society and the BC Coalition Institute are co-hosting a workshop series on “Sustaining Healthy Forests” in the Cowichan region to encourage citizen engagement in advocating for the health of the land. In light of the massive toll that current forestry practices are taking on the health of our environment and shared lives, engaging a First Nations perspective is critical to regaining the health of the land. This workshop invites respected members of Cowichan Tribes to share indigenous knowledge on forest health and invites Cowichan Valley community members (and beyond) to participate in learning and discussion. Guest Speakers: Qwuestenuxun Jared Williams – Cowichan Public Educator & Traditional Food Advocate Shannon Waters – Stz’uminus Band Member, Medical Health Officer for Cowichan Valley Huyamisé Della Rice-Sylvester – Cowichan Elder & Medicine Knowledge Keeper Su-taxwiye Sarah Morales– Cowichan Tribes member, Fellow of Indigenous Law, AP UVic

Location: Kerry Park Recreation Centre, Denis McLean Room 1035 Shawnigan Lake – Mill Bay Rd. Mill Bay, BC There will also be an opportunity for audience participation.

The event will be hybrid (in person and Zoom) for accessibility. Everyone welcome.
