Similar to earlier Coalition institutes, BCCI-2 had three components. The theme of Planetary Health: Local and Global was threaded throughout the program, with each step building on earlier reflections.
Planetary health refers to a systems approach to health that addresses planetary boundaries and linkages between human well-being and the state of the natural systems on which it depends.
Phase 1
Phase 1 included an intensive preparation extending over several weeks leading up to the on-site event in Victoria. Participants reviewed the below steps before the start of the BCCI, in order to help inform discussions at the workshop:
- Review the Resources library page to see what kind of activities and outputs are produced by the BCCI
- Work through the pre-workshop prep material
- Send a brief bio and head-shot to bcci.community@gmail.com
Phase 2
Phase 2 included a four-day on-site event taking place on the University of Victoria campus from August 8 to 11, 2019. We acknowledge with respect the Lekwungen-speaking peoples on whose traditional territory the university stands and the Songhees, Esquimalt and WSÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.
The program consisted of workshops, panels and open sessions focusing on participants’ self-directed learning objectives. It was built upon recent developments in the province (e.g. the “Clean BC” policy), local initiatives such as the “One Planet Saanich Initiative”, and university resources including the provincial “Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions” (PICS).
Phase 3
Phase 3 includes follow-up activities proposed and developed during the time in Victoria. Part of this will include engaging the Community of Practice, a regional network for global health research in British Columbia, connected to others in the province who are using research and knowledge translation for health equity.
The network aims to facilitate access to resources, mentorship, training, collective learning and opportunities to take part in new initiatives. Some of these are achieved with the following activities:
- Continued learning and sharing through a webinar series
- A dedicated platform for members
- Opportunities to develop and disseminate original content
