About

We are excited to announce an upcoming Colloquium as a significant milestone, rooted in our 2023 strategic plan, for the British Columbia Coalition Institute. This event, hosted by a dedicated team at UBC-Vancouver, will take place from September 24 to 26, 2023. With a focus on youth leadership, the Colloquium will bring together existing learning hubs, which are composed of universities and community partners.

Under the theme of “Youth Leadership for Global Health Equity in an Era of Climate Crisis,” the Colloquium aims to achieve several key goals:

  1. Empowering Local Initiatives: The colloquium will amplify and provide support to learning hubs in their ongoing local initiatives and projects.
  2. Youth-Centric Leadership Development: We aim to strengthen leadership capacities within learning hubs, with a specific emphasis on youth leadership.
  3. Collaboration and Innovation: The Colloquium aims to foster inter-hub collaboration, connection, and innovation, driving forward the BCCI’s Community of Practice.

We anticipate a dynamic and engaging event that will contribute to the BCCI’s mission of addressing climate change and promoting global health equity.

Event summary

Day 1 begins with introductions and a welcome dinner. Day 2 features a panel on youth leadership, workshops showcasing ongoing work centered around youth leadership, a nature activity and ends with an open session accessible to the public. Day 3 concludes with reflections, synthesizing activities, and discussing next steps.

Target audience

The BCCI-4 event will reach the following target audience:

  • Existing Community of Practice members and learning hub leads (i.e., early, mid, and senior career researchers) from across B.C. and the Pacific Northwest
  • Community partner representatives, including the Shawnigan Basin Society and the Center for One Health Research - Alaska Fairbanks
  • Undergraduate and graduate students from participating universities
  • Young professionals

By bringing together this diverse group of participants, the event aims to facilitate collaboration, knowledge exchange, and collective action towards addressing our strategic priorities.

Partnerships

The BCCI-4 event is receiving strong support from senior faculty members at the University of British Columbia School of Population and Public Health. Their guidance and involvement have been instrumental in shaping the event’s objectives, content, and overall success. Their dedication to advancing global health equity and addressing the climate crisis serve as a valuable foundation for the event, ensuring a high-quality program that fosters meaningful impact.

Timeline

The planning team for the BCCI-4 event is actively engaged and meets bi-weekly to ensure efficient progress. With a focus on delivering a successful event, we opened registrations in early August. This timeline allows us to carefully plan and coordinate all necessary aspects (i.e., presenters, accommodation, meals, etc.), ensuring a seamless registration process and providing ample time for participants to secure their attendance.
